Where are the Whitsundays and how do I get there?
The Whitsunday Islands are situated off the Queensland coast about 1100 km north of Brisbane and 620 km south of Cairns, Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway to the Whitsundays.
The “Useful Links” on the left cover flights and buses and there is a distance calculator that is very handy if you are thinking of driving, from a hire car point of view, the major hire car companies in Airlie Beach include Avis, Europe Car, Thrifty and Hertz.
If you are going to fly, you can either fly in to Hamilton Island airport or the Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine) airport, if you fly in to Hamilton Island, there is a ferry transfer to Airlie Beach that costs AU$55 p/p each way, allow at least 2 hours from landing to get to Airlie Beach. Whitsunday Coast airport is about 45 km from Airlie Beach, there are shuttle buses to and from the airport for every flight, they cost about AU$20 p/p each way, allow at least an hour from touch down to get to Airlie Beach. From Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane you can fly with either
Virgin Blue or JetStar and from Cairns you can only fly with Qantas.
Greyhound and Premier buses are up and down the coast at very regular intervals.
